No Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

Monday August 4, 2008

It seems like everyone is cutting back this year - including the State of Florida. For the past decade the state has offered a 7 to 10 day sales tax holiday on back to school merchandise. This year's budget cuts eliminated both the August Back-to-School and the June hurricane sales tax holidays.

Looking for ways to save? Check out area malls for upcoming sales and specials.

Did the elimination of the Sales Tax Holiday change how or where you purchased back-to-school items? Post your comments below.

With all the high prices out there – the year Florida needs a tax free school shopping week and our government once again lets the citizens down. If I could I would fire every one of you and that includes all government. YOU PEOPLE are supposed to work for us – or did you forget that? At this time in history the only words I can come up with for our government is “disgusting and shameful”. Sincerely, Sherri Hollinshead

If Florida is the only state that previously offered this incentive and now cut it, I am ashamed. It seems like we are the only state who is unable to properly manage and use our taxes. Although I understand we are cash-strapped, taxes are being misused. Florida’s corrupted government is getting out of control.

I understand Our Government needs more money to run the State affairs. We, the citizens, have also been going through hard times this year. A tax free school shopping week would be a good help to all parents who are buying school supplies for their children.

i think that is wrong because some familys need that week to get their kids supplies and clothes so it was a huge mistake.

I think is very unfair for all Florida residents that the government had to denied the low income residents to have a break on school items taxes for a week. The rule never change…. take from the poor to fix the rich problems.

I thought that Governor Charlie Christ was a strong supportor of Education & all of it’s needs. The Tax Exempt Policy for back-to-school needs, should always remain intact. The majority of working-class families really need this break. While I realize there are some opportunites for families to recieve free items, many families prefer to do their own personal shopping for their familes.
Is this request too much to ask for?
Florida’s unemployment rate is at an all-time high..this tax break is just what we need!

Florida should think about the tax free days to boost the economy. Parents spend money on their kids and they are our future lawmakers. Think about Gov Christ. I have two teenagers and I live in the most expensive county in Fl., Monroe. Please help us parents Thank You Gloria J Williams

This is not a family friendly state. I regret the day I moved my family here. Politics have been crooked here since the inception of the state. I am embarrassed that I have to tell my friends I live here. If you could tax us for being under 55 you would! Not reinstating the tax holiday for parents that are nickel and dimed by the schools we all support is just another example of how hostile this state is to the family unit.

(11) Michael says:

I would not recommend anyone to live in Florida. You can’t get home insurance, and if you can, they want to charge you an extra $2,000 for hurricane’s. The property taxes are also unfair and discremenatory. With the elimination of the Tax-Free sales tax days – this is just another blow to retailers during the recession ; and a much needed tax break to consumers that won’t happen. Your fine gov’t at work.

A 2008 study by Harvard economist Jeffrey A. Miron has estimated that legalizing drugs would inject $76.8 billion a year into the U.S. economy

you know witk the economy being the way it is you would think that poor people like myself would get a break on school shopping for my kids and family’s like myself ,how can it be that banks are getting millions and millions of dollars but us poor population cannot even get a break on one week of tax free go figure.
