Red Light Cameras Now Legal in Florida

By , About.com Guide   July 17, 2010

Follow me on:

Orlando drivers have another reason to participate in National Stop on Red Week - August 1 - 7.   On July 1, 2010, Florida Governor Charlie Crist signed the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act declaring that Red light cameras will be fully legal in Florida.  The majority of the states now utilize Red Light Camera programs of some sort.

The City of Apopka installed the cameras in 2006 after the city adopted City Ordinance No: 1813 "The City of Apopka Traffic Light Safety Act".   The first two red light cameras were installed at the intersections of Park Ave & Main Street and Sheeler Road & US Hwy 441.

Orlando began a test program in December of 2005 with a camera at the intersection of Hiawassee Road & Raleigh Street - just sending warning notices to violators.  Less than a year later, 7,000 violations and more than 3,500 warnings were given to red light runners at this location at which point, a 50% reduction in violations and crashes were recorded.

Now, just days after Gov. Christ legalizing red light cameras, Orange County Commissioners have given the OK to install the cameras at 10 Orlando locations.

Running a red light is obviously illegal AND very dangerous. Improving public safety AND creating a new revenue stream with automated camera enforcement programs…what’s not to like?

i agree with the cameras in principle, but it’s not right for people not to know whether or not a camera is being used for an intersection. signage to warn people of photo-enforcement is not optional, it’s a due process requirement.

also there are lots of situations a cop would excuse but a camera won’t, like when you make a right on red; or a left between the yellow arrow and solid green; or a situation where you’re obviously trying to slow down but can’t stop in time. but ATS is not a cop, they’re a for-profit corporation. the person making the decision shouldn’t have a financial stake in whether or not the driver gets fined.

You people that support this are retarded. You’re now liable for a crime they can’t even prove you committed? If someone gets pulled over for speeding in your car do you get a ticket for that as well because its your car? No, its the person who committed the infraction. Yet all of a sudden if they can’t prove you were the one that ran the red light, you’re liable because its your car. How can they even prove that you got the ticket in the mail? Stuff gets lost in the mail all the time.

Its just a BS way for the city who can’t balance their budgets to gain additional money from an already stressed populace. Its just like speed traps….no intention of keeping people safe, just another way to squeeze more life out of you

I believe if you aren’t running red lights you really don’t have to worry if there are cameras or not! Red light runners are endangering other people that have a right to feel safe on the roads. Right turn on red AFTER STOP is still legal.

If you weren’t the one driving your car while running the red light make your friend/family member pay the ticket or don’t let others use your vehicle.
