If you're interested in enrolling your child in an Orange County Public School magnet program, now is the time to begin your research. The magnet application period for the 2014-2015 school year opens on November 1, 2013, and this year's Magnet Fair will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Oak Ridge High School.
The event runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., but you don't need to be present the entire time. Provided you have some idea of where you'd like to enroll your child, an hour is probably sufficient to get all the information you'll need.
Magnet programs allow students the opportunity to focus their studies on areas that interest them. Most of the elementary programs teach a second language, but the programs become more varied in higher grades.
As long as you are a current resident of Orange County, you're welcome to apply to any magnet program online. Some are more difficult to get into than others are, and space is limited.
One important thing to consider is transportation. If your child is selected for placement in a magnet program outside of his/her school zone, the district will not provide transportation to or from school. Since many of the schools begin at or near rush hour, you'll need to consider childcare options and your work schedule before deciding on a school.
