Cirque du Soleil

Circus of the Sun

By Theresa Johnston, About.com

Cirque du Soleil was founded in Quebec in 1984 by a group of Canadian street performers - jugglers, stilt-walkers, contortionists, fire-breathers and unicyclists who decided to pool their talents and reinvent the circus. They organized their own festivals where other local street performers could come together to exchange ideas and techniques. Their first show was called Cirque du Soleil - Circus of the Sun.

Since the opening of Cirque du Soleil, which ran from 1984 to 1985, the company has performed in cities throughout the world, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna. New shows are continuously being added, both on a permanent and temporary basis. Some of the touring shows have been:

  • La Magie continue
  • We Reinvent the Circus
  • Nouvelle Experience
  • Fascination (1992)
  • Saltimbanco
  • Quidam
  • Corteo
  • Alegra
  • Dralion
