Planning Your Wedding

The Bridal Shower

By Theresa Johnston, About.com

The traditional bridal shower is usually given by a close friend of the bride or the maid of honor, and is usually given about 1-2 months before the wedding. A shower usually lasts about two hours.

Entertainment
Games and activities are a good way for the guests to relax, have a few laughs and get to know one another.

For women that prefer not to have games at their shower, there are other alternatives.

Other options for a shower or pre-wedding get together with the girls, would be a relaxing massage and/or makeover. Wedding Belles & Beaus (407-830-8778) will come to your home and provide massages, manicures and pedicures for you and your guests.

A nice dinner, lunch buffet, or afternoon tea at a local restaurant or at home is always an option.

Food & Drink
Elegant does not always have to mean difficult. A nice punch in a glass punch bowl decorated with flowers at the base can serve as a centerpiece. Several 2-liter bottles of assorted carbonated drinks, bottled water, flavored coffee and of course a bottle or two of wine are necessary for beverages. Simple appetizers, finger sandwiches and cake are all that is needed unless you are serving a lunch or dinner buffet.

  • In season fruit trays can be purchased at most local grocery stores, or put together the day of the shower and served with a delicious Fruit Dip.

  • The same is true about a vegetable platter and Tangy Vegetable Dip. Some groceries, and stores such as Sam's and Costco sell bags of vegetables already cut up.

  • Two or three types of crackers can be arranged around a bowl of Chicken Salad Spread, next to a plate of assorted cubed cheeses with decorative tooth picks for serving.

  • Simple finger sandwiches can be served with chicken salad, egg salad (include a few peanut butter sandwiches if children will be attending.)

  • In addition to, or instead of, you may want to try an easy Cherry Cobbler for dessert, that is delicious served warm.

Party Favors
Though, not always necessary, shower favors are a nice token of appreciation. When playing games, they can add excitement and competitiveness. Good choices for party favors might be:

  • Scented candles

  • Gourmet coffee/tea

  • Special soaps

  • Bubble bath or bath salts

  • Movie passes

  • Bottle of wine

  • House plants

  • Coffee mugs

  • Potpourri satchel

  • Specialty chocolates
