Gift Certificates
When all else fails, and cold hard cash is just not personal enough, a gift certificate just might save the day.  Especially helpful for parents who are looking for a token of appreciation for a teacher, coach, scout leader or other adult who spends time with their child.  With so many options available, you should first figure the amount that you want to spend, then determine what sort of gift certificate would be appropriate in that amount.  You never want to give a certificate for less than a visit to the establishment would be.  Example, don't give a $15 certificate to a restaurant where dinner for two usually runs closer to $20, or a theater certificate for $10, when the cost of a movie for two costs $15.  Listed below are some ideas on the types of certificates that are available.

  • Restaurants

  • Movie Theaters

  • Grocery Stores

  • Malls

  • Hardware Store

  • Record Stores

  • Golf Shops/Pro Shops

  • School Supply Stores

  • Beauty Salons

Or be more specific with the gift certificate, and apply it to an actual item that can be picked up or utilized at the recipients leisure.

  • Golf Lessons

  • Green Fees

  • Manicure/Pedicure/Facial/Massage

  • Lottery Tickets

  • Honey Ham

Subscriptions
Another simple idea that can be appropriate for both adults and children are Magazine Subscriptions.  Everyone from teens to grandparents appreciates a magazine. Now the trick here is to find a magazine that would be enjoyed by the individual.  Often times when a subscription is sent as a gift, a gift card will be sent to the recipient in the mail.  But if you are doing this at the last minute, or you would like to present a gift in person, purchase the current copy of magazine and include a note stating that a year's subscription is on it's way.

  • Children - There are a variety of children's magazines available, such as Disney Adventures, Ranger Rick, and  Sesame Street.

  • Teens - There are many teen magazines available for both girls and boys, but for anyone with Nintendo or Sega, Video Game Magazines are always a hit.

  • Grandparents - Many magazines now come in large print, such as Reader's Digest.
