SEMINOLE COUNTY, FLORIDA:

Sanford, one of Central Florida's oldest communities, Sanford was home to the U.S. Army post of Fort Mellon in the 1830's. During the first decade of the 20th century, Sanford was considered one of the largest vegetable shipping centers in the United States. When Seminole County was established in 1913, Sanford was named the county seat.

LOCATION:

The City of Sanford is located at the extreme northern end of Seminole County. Sanford is the county seat of Seminole County - in the downtown area, you will find the county services buildings including the Seminole County Courthouse. The Seminole County School Board is In the five-points area of Sanford.

EDUCATION: :

Seminole Community College, established in 1965 has several campuses throughout the Central Florida area. The main location is in Sanford Florida. The college, accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools, offers two-year college credit degrees (A.A., A.S.)

TRANSPORTATION :

  • By car, Sanford can be easily accessed by Interstate-4 and the Central Florida Greenway (417).
  • The Lynx public bus system services portions of Sanford.
  • The Amtrak Autotrain has a passenger station in Sanford.

SHOPPING:

One of the Seminole County's newest shopping malls, the Seminole Towne Center, near the I-4 exit of 101C (westbound) and 101AB (eastbound).

The historic area of downtown Sanford has been revitalized into an antique lover's paradise, complete with little cafes, beautiful brick-lined streets, and vintage little shops.

One of the largest and most popular flea markets in Florida, Flea World - Fun World provides new and used merchandise for sale along with fresh produce.

MONTHLY EVENTS :

The City of Sanford presents several free and minimal charge monthly events.
  • Jazzed in Sanford - Monthly Jazz Concert series held the first Saturday of the month in Magnolia Square, downtown Sanford.
  • Alive After Five - The second Thursday of each month, enjoy themed entertainment and activities.
  • Fourth Friday's - Celebrate the evening with art, music and hors d'oeuvres that begins at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center.
  • Cinema in the Park - Free family movies are presented on the third Friday of each month at Centennial Park.

BORDERING CITIES:

Lake Monroe is part of Sanford's northern border and beyond that is Volusia County. Within Seminole County, Sanford borders the cities of Lake Mary to the west and Winter Springs to the south.
