BACKGROUND:
Originally known as DeLand Academy and later changed to DeLand University, Florida's first private university was founded in 1883. In 1889, the name was changed to Stetson University to honor John B. Stetson, the nationally-known hat manufacturer, who was an important benefactor and founding trustee of the university. Since the beginning, the educational mission of Stetson University has been "to integrate the pursuit of a liberal education with the search for meaning in our lives and communities."
For over 15 years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Stetson University among the South's top four regional universities.
