Free Blood Pressure Screenings

From , former About.com Guide

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is dedicated to educating Central Florida about the dangers of High Blood Pressure. The challenge is for at least one million Orlando area residents to get their blood pressure checked by June 2009. His 10 month plan is possibly the largest communitywide initiative of this kind - a world record could be in the makings here.

Project Pressure is joining with Get Healthy Florida and Centra Care to help educate Central Florida residents about our county's silent killer - high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure not only damages arteries, it puts you at risk for Stroke, Heart Attack, Aneurysm and many other medical catastrophes.

During the coming months, we will see all sorts of public events including free blood-pressure screenings during the Free Flu Shot clinics in October. Street parties at area fire stations will take place in November and the "Prize Patrol" van will be unveiled. Once the Prize Patrol van will takes to the streets it will bring t-shirts and prizes to those participating.

The event will conclude in June of 2009. Hopefully by then goal of blood-pressure screenings on one million Central Florida residents will have been exceeded.

A communitywide concert will be the events finale where Florida organizers of Project Pressure hope to check 10,000 people in an eight hour day, thus setting a world record for the most screenings done in one day. Japan currently holds the record with 4900 readings.
