Monorail
For children there is nothing more exciting than riding on Disney’s monorail, except riding in the front car of the monorail with the monorail operator. For the parent who wants to hit that “home run” with their child, ask the “cast members” at the Contemporary if your family can ride in the front when you are boarding at the Contemporary. The cast members often don’t take requests when people board at the Magic Kingdom or the parking lot (transportation center), but they will try to accommodate you if you ask at a resort. It will only add to your child’s trip to sit in the very front of the monorail.

Staying at the Contemporary means you can use the Disney monorail like a subway. You can take the monorail from the Contemporary to the Transportation Center (Parking Lot) and then exit and switch monorails and board the monorail if you are going to EPCOT. You will then be at EPCOT without ever using your car. This monorail trip is a ride in itself giving you a chance to see some of Disney’s undeveloped land between EPCOT and the Magic Kingdom; it is also the point where the Disney monorail system reaches its highest speeds.

Besides the monorail there is bus service from the Contemporary to all other Disney theme parks and even regular boat (launch) service to the Magic Kingdom.

Contemporary Resort Dining Choices
There are a number of dining choices available to you within the Contemporary with two of the more popular being Chef Mickey’s and the California Grill. Chef Mickey’s is a great choice for the family, especially if you choose a character dinner. Chef Mickey’s is a buffet style dinner (approximately $25 per person) which ensures there is something for everyone’s liking, but food is not the main attraction. In 5-10 minute intervals, a different Disney character appears and makes its way from table to table greeting all the children much to their delight. Reservations are virtually required at almost all times of the year. While you are eating, you’ll watch as the monorails quietly sail nearly directly above your head on their way to the Magic Kingdom.

The California Grill is located atop the Contemporary on its 15th floor. It provides a magnificent view of the entire area. If offers one of the most upscale dinners in Disney. It is well suited for a couple to spend an evening relaxing, eating and enjoying the view. Reservations are strongly recommended as well.

Rooms
If you are looking for inexpensive lodging, the Contemporary Resort is not the place for you – rooms start at around $240 per night + tax and you won’t find discounts, deals or specials because of where it’s located and its reputation. Rooms, however, are spacious.

Despite its steep cost, it will be a vacation stay you and your family will never forget. Best bet: September and October are two of the best months to visit Disney and stay at the Contemporary; rates are lowest and the park is least crowded.
