Hurricane Survival

What we need to know this year and what learned from 2004

Once again the hurricane forecasters at The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are predicting another above-normal hurricane season.

An average season has 11 named storms, including six hurricanes for which two reach major status. This year NOAA is predicting an average hurricane season with only around 12 named storms.

2004 took everyone by surprise, including myself. Having lived in the Central Florida area for almost 35 years and never coming close to the storm activity that we experienced in the last couple of years, I learned a thing or two about hurricanes and how to be better prepared. The following list contains pointers that after weathering (no pun intended) 3 hurricanes of 2004, I would like to share:
